ABSTRACT The application of Capillary Zone Electrophoresis (CZE) to the analysis and determination of cyanide and related compounds is the main objective of the present work. Different problems of certain industrial and environmental significance have been considered. CZE methods for the analysis of leachates of mineral samples and automobile catalytic converters, and electroplating solutions in order to determine individual metal cyanide complexes have been developed. On the other hand, free cyanide as well as other related species such as HS-, SCN-, NO3- and CNO- have been also determined. Different separation and detection problems have been solved by different approaches such as the addition of buffer modificators, the application of indirect detection methods or the use of derivatization processes. The obtained results demonstrate that CZE is an instrumental technique that can be successfully used in the monitoring of many cyanide compounds both in industrial processes as well as in environmental samples.
