ABSTRACT Currently there is no long-term effective treatment for unresectable neuroblastoma. Oral inoculation with a nontoxic, attenuated strain of Salmonella typhimurium with an incorporated human IL-2 gene (named χ4550(IL-2)) has been shown to reduce the colorectal hepatic metastatic burden of mice by 58%. In mice inoculated with neuroblastoma in the retroperitoneal space, reduction after oral treatment with χ4550(IL-2) reaches 84% when compared to saline controls. Oral attenuated Salmonella typhimurium could lead to decreased tumor burden and subsequent increased survival in patients with unresectable malignancies.
