ABSTRACT Analytical chemistry can be employed for measurement, not only of the concentration of chemical components in a mixture of substances, but also of their separate physicochemical quantities using traditional analytical techniques, e.g. gas chromatography. This can be done in a time-resolved way, using Inverse Gas Chromatography (IGC). A simple traditional gas chromatograph, equipped with an appropriate detector, can be modified to include a T shape chromatographic column containing the solid bed under study with no gas running through it. A series of narrow extra chromatographic peaks is obtained, the mathematical analysis of which leading to the calculation of each physicochemical quantity desired. This is done by means of rather simple computer programs already published. This method records various properties of the stationary phase, statistically weighted over a freely chosen time period of measurement. It can be applied to record time adsorption energies, adsorption entropies, local monolayer capacities, local isotherms, energy and entropy distribution functions, lateral molecular interactions, diffusion coefficients on solid surfaces, et al. Several original papers have already been published in well known journals, describing in detail the method and its applications.
