ABSTRACT Antibiotic therapy is often an essential part of the management of hepatobiliary disease, and yet can cause significant hepatic morbidity and mortality. This review article examines the epidemiology and pathogenesis of antibiotic induced liver injury, and discusses the role of antibiotics in the treatment and prophylaxis of infectious diseases of the liver, both in patients with and without pre-existing liver disease.
