ABSTRACT This review deals with studies carried out to investigate the interaction between low-power visible light and certain components of both RNA and protein synthesis machinery. A general stimulation of biosynthetic activities following separate irradiation of in vitro system components is reported. Photostimulation is not only a peculiar feature of red coherent light, but it also occurs with red, green and yellow non coherent light even if to a different degree. As for cell photostimulation, it has been demonstrated that He-Ne laser irradiation of isolated hepatocytes causes an increase in cytosolic and mitochondrial protein synthesis dependent on fluence rather than fluence rate. The changes in cytosolic free calcium concentration and cell membrane potential are discussed in the light of cell photostimulation.
