ABSTRACT Oils were totally extracted from Enterolobium cyclocarpum (ECS) and Polyalthia longifolia (PLS) seeds and analyzed for their physicochemical properties, mineral composition, fatty acid composition, lipid classes, fatty acid distribution in the lipid fractions, unsaponifiable matter content and molecular speciation of the triacylglycerols through standard analytical techniques. The oil yield was found to be 2.64 ± 0.03% in ECS and 4.26 ± 0.01% in PLS. The saponification values obtained were 192.36 ± 1.65 and 197.25 ± 0.55 mg KOH/g while the iodine values found were 107.97 ± 0.02 and 64.04 ± 2.70 mg/I2/g in Enterolobium cyclocarpum seed oil (ECSO) and Polyalthia longifolia seed oil (PLSO) respectively. The oils were found to be rich in K, Ca, Mg, and fairly Na. Potassium was the most abundant mineral in these oils while copper was the least. C18:2 (47.076 g/ 100 g fatty acids) was the most abundant fatty acid found in ECSO and C18:1 (44.202 g/100 g fatty acids) in PLSO. The total unsaturation was 72.68% in ECSO and 57.78% in PLSO. Neutral lipids were the dominant lipid fraction in the oils. The most abundant molecular species were C46 (34.07%) followed by C44 (26.59%) and C48 (26.42%) in ECSO while C48 (77.26%) was found in PLSO. The total Tocols found in ECSO was 1842.0 µg/mL while 146.2 µg/mL was obtained in PLSO. Hydrocarbons, phytol, stigmasta-7,16-dien-3-ol, campesterol, stigmasterol, beta and gamma-sitsterol and alpha-cubebene were some identified unsaponifiable matter in the oils. These physicochemical properties and the fatty acids profile of the oils suggest their good industrial applications.
