With the recent development in biotechnology, the importance of bioprocess systems engineering has been recognized by many researchers. In the present paper, a brief review is made in such areas as “on-line sensor development”, “on-line state and/or parameter estimation”, “process optimization”, and “control strategies” in an attempt to see the current status and to consider future perspectives.
