ABSTRACT

Soil loss from erosion can be estimated by: (1) Comparisons of cultivated and eroded pedons with uncultivated and uneroded pedons on the similar landscape positions with the depth to various surface and subsurface layers used to estimate the soil loss from erosion. (2) Documentation of the extent of deposition of sediment in a sediment basin and the amount delivered to a stream may allow an estimate of soil loss from surrounding hillslopes. (3) Use of models such as the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or the Water Erosion Prediction Program (WEPP) model to estimate soil loss from erosion. (4) Organic matter or other component redistribution as an alternative indicator of accelerated soil erosion. The strengths and weaknesses of each method of estimating soil loss from erosion is presented.
