ABSTRACT The development of the nitrogen fertilizer recommendations for sugar beets on the basis of the Electro Ultrafiltration (EUF) soil testing method is described. When the method was first introduced into routine soil analysis in Austria in 1974, only EUF nitrate was measured and used as the basis for nitrogen fertilizer recommendations. Field trials revealed that this was unsatisfactory in certain sites. In 1981, a method for determining easily soluble organic N fraction (EUF Norg) in the EUF extracts was developed. Fertilizer recommendations for sugar beets were based on both EUF N fractions by estimating 1 mg NO3-N/kg soil to equal 3 kg N/ha and 1 mg Norg to equal 5 kg N/ha. The calculation of the N requirements of beets were improved by taking the total amount of Norg and the amount of calcium found in the 80°C fraction into account when estimating the Norg factor. Multiple regression used to evalu ate the influence of the EUF Norg 80oC/20oC quotient has led to a new equation for the calculation of the N requirements of sugar beets. Both EUF N fractions are valued with the factor 4.4 per mg NO3N or Norg respectively (similar to the application of EUF in cereals). The experience of farmers and the sugar industry in western and central Europe with the application of the EUF system are reviewed. Nitrogen fertilization according to EUF soil test recommendations has not only led to an increase in white sugar yield/ha, but has also increased farm income due to better prices for high-quality beets and reduced expenditures on fertilizer. It has also proved to be an important step in environmental protection by helping to prevent nitrate leaching into the ground water.
