ABSTRACT

The biochemical cycles of K and Ca in forest ecosystems have been reviewed. The K and Ca outputs from the ecosystem, their behaviour in the soil, their uptake, transport and distribution within the trees, their return to the soil, their presence in the litter and finally the budget of their cycles have been considered. It appears that the K circulates rapidly in forest ecosystems and that it must be opposed to the slight mobility of Ca.
