ABSTRACT The level of crop production by many farmers in developing countries remain relatively low. This is mainly due to their inability to use more efficient costly inputs. Therefore, to enhance and sustain the productivity, it is necessary that low-cost agronomic practices are developed. Studies carried out in many parts of the world indicate that mulching reduces soil degradation and sustains productivity. It is less costly and environmentally sound. Hence, mulching can be considered as a suitable practice to sustain productivity in a system of low-cost inputs.
