ABSTRACT

I have reviewed the studies concerning the thermal biology of cicadas. The effect of temperature on the biology of cicadas and the strategies used to deal with temperature are discussed. Thermal strategies used to regulate body temperature for activity can be divided into behavioral and physiological responses. Behavioral mechanisms include basking, shade seeking, changing body orientation with respect to the sun, using the wings as a parasol, selection of an appropriate microhabitat, vertical migrations, and suspension of activity. Physiological responses include endothermy, evaporative cooling, and thermal adaptation.
