This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of the process known as “Membrane Distillation” (MD). The contributions of our Research Group are emphasised. The fundamental concepts associated with MD as well as the most important problems in the subject are introduced. A theoretical approach is presented that permits to consider them adequately. The goodness of the model is checked by comparing its predictions with the experimental results obtained with several membranes, in different experimental conditions.
