ABSTRACT

DNA analysis technologies have greatly advanced along with the progress of the human genome project since 1990. The first stage of the project has been the structure analysis of genomes which requires a high throughput DNA analysis system. Various methods and instruments have been developed. Besides the slab gel electrophoresis, capillary array gel electrophoresis or DNA probe array on a chip are being used for DNA analysis. The genome project is moving to the second stage of functional genomics, where the rapid screening of expressed genes and analysis of total gene expression profile are becoming important. For that purpose, new technologies including rapid gel electrophoresis using capillaries as well as micro-fabricated electrophoresis channels, DNA chips, and mass spectrometers are becoming important. These new technologies and methods for high throughput DNA sequencing and gene expression profile analysis are reviewed.
