ABSTRACT We have been employing optical methods for the determination of characterizational (primarily structural) information about actinide and lanthanide compounds and have recently expanded our methods to include luminescence spectroscopy. Use of these techniques has primarily dealt with identification of structures and structural distortions/changes stemming from changes in temperature, pressure, or slight variations in composition, as reflected in the optical characteristics of the pure or optically-active ion-doped compounds.
