ABSTRACT

In Argentine Central Pampas (32 millions hectares) wetlands take place in warm-humid to semiarid weather in saline-sodic and sodic soils, under the influence of water tables close to soil surface. In the last 10 years over 5 millions hectares were affected by floods as result of humid weather cycle and agricultural usage of those lands. In this paper a review of the characteristic and restoration of these wetlands is presented. Wetlands have a hydromorphic dynamic during spring-summer time and another halomorphic in fall-winter season. In these landscapes 325 vascular plant species organized in 14 communities are distributed in a complex gradient of salinity and flooding. Different hydrologic, ecologic, and soil patterns for this area has been described, referred to short term water table, vegetation-environment relation and soil - with or without vegetation surface-functioning. These patterns allowed the understanding of the main causes of environment behavior at different scales, as well as the design and application of ordering strategies, management and recover of the lands. Strategies for restoring and optimization of wetlands productivity were tested and developed along with techniques such as controlled grazing, coverage and mulching, soil loosening, interseeding, subsoiling, revegetation, species introduction, afforestation (biodrainage), gypsum applications, localized drainages, pastures fertilization and grazing exclosures, all of which are discussed in this paper.
