Electrochemical technique with spatial resolution, including scanning single micro reference electrode, scanning double micro reference electrodes, scanning micro chemical  probes, and array electrode have been developed. The effects of electrochemical and micro chemical environmental inhomogeneities on the corrosion behavior, and the mechanism for various localized corrosion of metals have been further understood by using these novel electrochemical techniques appropriately.
