ABSTRACT

Due to the range of applications of Carbon fibers, i.e., aircraft industry, biosensor technology, batteries, etc.,the interest in advanced fiber reinforced composite materials has increased. The application of a matrix compatible interface acting as a coupling agent was found to improve the interfacial adhesion between reinforcing (C-Fibers) and polymeric matrix.

Electrocoating of a polymeric interface improves the surface properties of  carbon fibers.

The electrocoating process offer the advantage of controlling the thickness, surface functionalities and homogeneities.

Electrocopolymerization (electrografting) of carbazole (conjugated polymer) and acrylamide (nonconjugated polymer) onto carbon fibers are reviewed. Particular emphasis placed on the recent surface characterization techniques applied to the resulting electrografted polymers onto carbon fibers,i.e., SEM,CV,XPS,AFM,zeta potential measurements, FTIR-reflectance measurements.
