Is aging associated with cognitive function in multiple sclerosis?

The current study involved a cross-sectional analysis of age-related cognitive decline in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). 257 adults with MS underwent the Brief International Cognitive Assessment in Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS), including tests of mental processing speed and memory. Participants were divided into four age cohorts for analysis (i.e., 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-79 years of age). The primary analytical model involved analysis of variance with a priori linear contrasts on cognitive assessments. There were statistically significant linear declines for all cognitive assessments of the BICAMS across age cohorts. Overall, this study demonstrates a worsening of performance in multiple domains of cognition (i.e., processing speed and memory) across age cohorts, such that processing speed and learning and memory seemingly worsen with age in MS.
