ABSTRACT

Valence bond structures of the Lewis and increased-valence types are used to provide qualitative valence bond representations of the electronic structures for N=N bonded RNO adducts and dimers, and the ONNO22- anion of Angeli’s salt. An increased-valence formulation is postulated for a mechanism for the aerobic decomposition of Angeli’s salt. The associated wavefunction for the mechanism is relevant for pericyclic reactions that involve the reorganization of three pairs of electrons and six atomic centres.
