ABSTRACT Overweight and obese individuals are at a significantly higher risk of hospitalization or death from SARS-Cov2 infection. Obesity impairs immunity by altering the response of cytokines, resulting in a decrease in the cytotoxic cell response of immuno-competent cells which have a key anti-viral role in the balance of endocrine hormones. In this review we will discuss the epidemiological data that provide insight into the association of COVID-19 and obesity and the possible causes and mechanisms, mainly endocrine and immunologic, underlying this relationship. It is significant to improve therapeutic interventions and reduce unfavorable outcomes for obese patients. The reasonable hypothesis that obesity will blunt the efficacy of vaccines will also be examined.
