ABSTRACT

One of the most common reasons for death is heart stroke caused by stenosis of coronary arteries. This stenosis will start with the deposition of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles on the blood vessel wall. Some observations show that most vascular diseases happen at curved vessels and bifurcation locations of vessels. In this study, flow hemodynamic parameters and settling of LDL particles in a real coronary artery were studied using the OpenFOAM software. Moreover, the effect of vessel movement on particle depositions and both non-Newtonian and Newtonian behaviours of blood were investigated. Also, particle depositions surveyed using the Eulerian-Lagrangian method, drag force, Saffman lift force, pressure gradient, virtual mass, and Brownian forces were considered. Results indicate that non-Newtonian behavior of blood can only be seen in small vessels. In bigger vessels, there was no remarkable difference between the Newtonian and non-Newtonian models. Vessel movement has no significant effects on the shear stress of the related wall. This shear stress does not show considerable changes with inlet velocity alteration. Particle depositions exist either in oscillation walls or lower shear stress walls.
