ABSTRACT

By means of column (CC), thin-layer (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) the authors investigated the changes in carotenoid content in the respective body parts of frog  Rana esculenta and Rana temporaria specimens in the period of life activity. Thirty carotenoids were identified including such carotenoids as two epoxy forms of β-carotene, α-cryptoxanthin, isozeaxanthin, diatoxanthin and two apocarotenoids (β-apo-2’- and β-apo-8’-carotenal) which are rare to animals. In the specimens of both sexes carotenoid were found to shift within the respective body parts during their life activity, especially in the pre-mating period. In both frog species, the highest concentration of carotenoids during their life activity was found in the liver and intestines.
