Enaminonitriles 2a-d were obtained in good yields by treatment of compounds 1a-d with dimethylformamide-dimethylacetal (DMF-DMA) in refluxing m-xylene. Cyclocondensation of enaminonitriles 2 with hydrazine hydrate in N,N-dimethyl-formamide afforded the novel pyrazole derivatives 5a-c. Treatment of enaminonitriles 2a,b with hydrazine hydrate at room temperature yielded the novel hydrazine derivatives 4a,b which on refluxing with N,N-dimethylformamide produced the pyrazoles 5a,b. Terephthalaldehyde 6 was condensed with cyanoaceto-hydrazide 7 to yield the novel bishydrazone 8 which on treatment with dimethylformamide-dimethylacetal (DMF-DMA) followed by treatment with hydrazine hydrate afforded the novel bispyrazole 10. Ketene dithioacetal 11 was reacted with cyanoaceto-hydrazides 1 in the presence of potassium carbonate in N,N-dimethylformamide and yielded the respective pyridinone 13a-c.
