ABSTRACT

Poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) ranks second among commodity polymers with the highest consumption of merchandise due to its low cost and easy modification to flexible products using a plasticizer. However, the poor thermal stability of PVC remains a major research challenge. Many additives such as heat stabilizers, plasticizers, fillers, etc., have been proposed for use in the processing of polymers. The literature on the poor thermal stability of PVC and the use of a wide variety of stabilizers from different sources to improve the thermal stability of the polymer shows that a considerable amount is already known, but there is still much to be learnt as the use of renewable sources in the preparation of these additives have been revitalized because of environmental concerns about the use of synthetic additives. This review presents a brief update on the use of additives from renewable sources in PVC processing.
