ABSTRACT
 
In recent years, attention has been paid to prevent diseases and promote human health and to protect the environment besides reducing the risks caused by using synthetic chemicals. Hence the use of natural products has become a big necessity. The aim of this work is to evaluate some secondary metabolites, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of methanolic Cistus monspeliensis leaf extracts. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonat) radical scavenging. The total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin concentrations of the methanolic extract were determined using spectrophotometric methods. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated against three bacterial strains (Escherichia coli (ATCC8739), Salmonella typhimurium (NCTC 6017), Aeromonas hydrophila EI, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213), Listeria monocytogenes (ATCC 7644) Bacillus cereus (ATCC1247), Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans) according to the Agar well diffusion method. The obtained results showed that the tested extract was rich in phenol (181.90 mg gallic acid per gram dry weight) than in flavonoids (0.35 mg catechin equivalents per gram dry weight). The condensed tannin content was 5.06 mg catechin equivalents per gram dry weight. In addition, the methanolic extract showed much better antioxidant activity against the DPPH (IC50 = 10 µg/ml) and ABTS (IC50 = 9 µg/ml) radical scavenging compared to the positive control (Butylated hydroxytoluene). The Cistus monspeliensis leaves showed promising efficiency against all tested microorganisms with a zone of inhibition ranging between 22 and 23.5 mm. Cistus monspeliensis could be recommended in the treatment of some diseases caused by resistant bacteria.
