An unusual transformation of 4-(2-hydroxy- and aminoaryl)-1,2,3-thia- and selenadiazoles allows a convenient approach towards S- and Se-derivatives of benzofuranes and indoles. These compounds possessing potential biological activity may be the useful synthons for organic chemistry. The scope and synthetic applications of the reaction will be disscussed below.
