ABSTRACT

Twenty rats were divided into four groups (5 rats/each). Rats in group 1 were fed basal diet and served as the control group. Rats in group 2 were fed the basal diet mixed with turmeric 2%. Rats in group 3 were fed the basal diet mixed with 1% cholesterol and referred to high cholesterol group. Rats in groups 4 were fed the high cholesterol diet mixed with turmeric 2%. Levels of triacylglycerol (TAG), total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), lipid peroxidation significantly (P < 0.05) increased, whereas high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) concentration and catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S transferase (GST) activities decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in rats fed high cholesterol diet compared to control. Inclusion of turmeric 2% corrected these values toward the control levels. Conclusively, dietary supplementation of Turmeric 2% ameliorates the detrimental effects of high cholesterol and is recommended as a hypolipidemic and antioxidant agent in rats.
