Due to the prevalence of mixing tanks in industries, an understanding of their structure and how this affects flow patterns and mixing time can be invaluable when it comes to minimizing power draw and maximising profits and mixing quality. As such, a great amount of research has been carried out in this field. This includes experimental studies on scaled-down models to determine the efficacy of specific geometric configurations via means of particle image velocimetry as well as via computational means known as computational fluid dynamics (CFD). An understanding of the underlying momentum equations in a given CFD program can enable a wide variety of analytical uses that are not limited to mixing tank analysis including turbomachinery analysis and aerofoil studies.
