ABSTRACT

Ionic liquids (ILs) are organic salts with melting points below 100 oC. They have tunable properties and not all ionic liquids have the same properties and hence they find many application platforms. The utilization of ionic liquids as green chemicals in some petroleum applications such as enhanced oil recovery and emulsification has been reviewed. Therefore, the application of ionic liquids as demulsifiers is of great value. This review article aims to survey the most recent methods for crude oil demulsification focusing on ionic liquids as promising green materials with high demulsification efficiency. Furthermore, a comparison between the ionic liquids and traditional demulsifiers will be introduced.
