ABSTRACT In the second installment in this series, applications of locally I-optimal designs for unconstrained and constrained 4-component mixtures are discussed. Locally I-optimal designs, which minimize the average prediction variance, are extremely useful when the objective is to develop a high-quality response surface approximation. A simple technique to generate the designs using the trace of the weighted moments matrix is discussed and then applied to several practical examples. For unconstrained 4-component mixtures, locally I-optimal designs are compared to traditional designs. The example for a constrained 4-component mixture is used to illustrate how the technique can be applied to satisfy various design criteria.
