ABSTRACT

Photo-Fries rearrangement is one of the most studied reactions in photochemistry. It has both academic and applied significance in organic and polymer chemistry. Surprisingly, the rearrangement is accompanied by the production of large amounts of phenol (naphthol). We propose that phenolic compounds are formed as a result of disproportionation between phenoxyl (aroxyl) radicals and acetyl (carboxyl) radicals.
