ABSTRACT

Galparan and transportan are two galanin/mastoparan chimeras that display drastically different properties from the parent peptides. In contrast to mastoparan, galparan e.g. inhibits heterotrimeric G-proteins and has a biphasic effect on the Na+/K+- ATPase. Transportan is a cell penetrating peptide, potentially capable of high efficiency transport of large hydrophilic compounds, such as peptides and oligonucleotides, over the plasma membrane. In this article we review the actions of galparan and transportan as well as literature on their parent, peptides, galanin and mastoparan.
