ABSTRACT

ICP-MS is now accepted as a standard tool for the analysis of environmental matrices. While it is highly sensitive, accurate and precise and provides isotopic information, its main drawback is that it is subject to spectral and non-spectral interferences. Several methods have been applied in recent years for the removal of these interferences, which constitute a serious problem. The most important of these methods involve anion exchange resins, matrix modification, precipitation, desolvation, thermal vaporisation, chromatographic coupling and different modifications in the sample introduction systems. Recent modifications in the sample inlet systems using modified capillaries have attracted considerable attention. This paper describes the capability of these systems for interference removal and their application to date and also summarises the various interferences and their removal in the different procedures established.
