ABSTRACT

In order to assess whether odor perception and responses depend on enantiometric structure or not, sensory tests and portable forehead surface electroencephalographic (IBVA-EEG) measurements were conducted for enantiomers of linalool, that is (R)- (-)-linalools isolated from lavender oil with specific rotation of [ α ]D= -15.1 ° , (S)-( + )-linalools from coriander oil with [ α ]D= +17.4°, and (RS)-( ±)- linalools from commercial linalool with [ α ]D= 0° and content of (R)-form 50.9% and (S)-form 49.1 %. The elucidation of such sensory and physiological endpoints of enantiomers of linalool would be of primary importance not only for enantiometric stereospecificity on olfaction but also for human chemoreception science, as this paradigm has highly informative about non- verbal responses to odorants. This paper is an overview of our recent study.
