ABSTRACT Cytokines are protein hormones regulating multiple functions during the innate as well as the acquired immune responses. Interaction with expression of these mediators points to the major role played by cytokines in inflammatory and infectious models of human diseases. Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus may result in severe joint destruction and death due to inefficient eradication of bacteria and uncontrolled inflammatory responses. Recent studies indicate the possibility of immunomodulation using cytokines or their antagonists as therapeutic tools in staphylococcal infections.
