ABSTRACT
 
Wood vinegar and wood tar have been used historically, based on traditional knowledge, for skin care in many parts of the world. This study was conducted to evaluate the acute dermal and ocular irritation potential of wood pyrolysis byproducts (wood vinegar and wood tar) obtained from a mixture of wood species cocktail from Ivory Coast. The safety assessment of these byproducts was carried out in accordance with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) guidelines 404 and 405, using New Zealand albino rabbits as animal model. The results showed that neither wood vinegar nor wood tar caused dermal lesions, and only minimal ocular lesions were observed; the substances were classified as non-irritants based on the dermal and ocular irritation indexes. Abrasions on the rabbit skin healed within 48 hours post-exposure. These findings suggest that wood pyrolysis byproducts should be considered for the development of skin care products.
