ABSTRACT
 
Recent research has underscored the importance of conducting a comprehensive assessment of medicinal plants owing to their therapeutic capabilities. This study investigates the phytochemical composition, antioxidant potential, and hepatoprotective properties of Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees.. Fresh leaves of Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees. were gathered from Tamana Ghat, Kukudakhandi Block, in the Ganjam district of Odisha state and the leaf extract was prepared using methanol and ethanol as solvents. Qualitative phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of alkaloids, phenol, terpenoid, steroid, tannin and protein across all extracts. The total phenolic content in the methanol extract was measured as 177 ± 0.34 mg/g GAE, while in the ethanol extract it was 152 ± 0.99 mg/g GAE. The flavonoid concentration in the methanol fraction was found to be 129.33 ± 0.05 mg/g RUE and in the ethanol fraction, it was 114.59 ± 0.86 mg/g RUE. The free radical scavenging activity of A. paniculata extract against 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) radicals was assessed using a UV-vis spectrophotometer. The IC50 values for the methanolic and ethanolic extracts in DPPH were 380.19 and 395.89 μg/mL, respectively, while the IC50 value for ascorbic acid was 278.53 μg/mL. Conversely, the IC50 value for the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) radical was higher for the methanolic extract at 385.82 μg/mL compared to the ethanolic extract at 398.24 μg/mL. In conclusion, the methanolic extracts of the plant exhibited the highest potency in achieving 50% inhibition, demonstrating a strong correlation with total phenolic content. The findings of this study clearly indicate that A. paniculata extracts are a valuable source of phytochemicals and exhibit significant antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities.
