ABSTRACT The present review covers the synthesis, properties and reactivity of 6-alkoxy-5-cyano-3,4-dihydro-2-pyridones and their utility as starting materials for the synthesis of a variety of heterocyclic compounds such as pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridines, pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines and 1,6-naphthyridines. Special attention is dedicated to the factors that control the cyclization of the intermediate 1, 5-dinitrile systems that afford the two last aforementioned heterocycles.
