Acid-base equilibria for polyfunctional compounds are more complicated than for mono- functional ones. Therefore, experimental studies are difficult or even impossible to perform, particularly for derivatives in which transfer of the proton takes place within the molecule and is a very fast reaction. Different methods which permit to estimate the partial (called microscopic) dissociation constants (or other thermodynamic acidity-basicity parameters) in derivatives of biological interest will be discussed.
