ABSTRACT Camel is a cud-chewing mammal with some peculiarities. The Camel survives dry conditions by excreting a concentrated urine, by tolerating a water loss and by its ability to endure a rise in body temperature. The present study compiles the various aspects of Camel glutathione based detoxification system. The roles of glutathione S-transferases and glutathione redox cycle are examined in the liver of one hump camel- Camelus dromedarius. The method involved the determination of glutathione contents and the estimation of glutathione S-transferases, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase activities. The data suggest that Camel may be disproportionately more efficient in eliminating toxicants via glutathione dependent detoxification mechanism than the other studied ruminants.
