Polydiacetylenes are among the most studied compounds because of their very interesting optical and conductive properties. There numerous experimental results but many of their characteristics are now understood thanks to theoretical studies. A review of some of these studies is presented. An introduction of some experimental facts is first given, followed by a second part devoted to a review of structural and linear optical properties; a third section considers work on non-linear optical properties.
