ABSTRACT

The effects of interchange reactions on the phase structure and the mechanical properties of representative blends based on polyesters and bisphenol A polycarbonate have been studied. Transesterification reactions in polyester/polyester blends and alcoholysis reactions in blends of polyesters with the poly(hydroxy ether of bisphenol A) are analyzed in order to check the possibilities for compatibilization of the blends by means of reactions. The mechanical properties, mainly fracture properties, improve as a consequence of transesterification reactions due to the change in the phase structure of the blends induced by the copolymers produced. Alcoholysis reactions give rise to a general increase in the Young`s modulus and yield stress, higher than that observed in transesterified blends, due to branching and crosslinking. However, ductility decreases, and eventually practically brittle materials are obtained.
