The functional ecdysteroid receptor is generally considered as heterodimer of EcR and USP, but there are several indications that each nuclear receptor has its own functional role in addition. In this paper we will characterize first EcR and USP separately and then describe the influence of the dimerization partner on the function of the heterodimeric receptor complex. Special emphasis will be put on ligand and DNA binding, nuclear transport and dimerization.
