ABSTRACT Cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) is a substrate-inducible microsomal enzyme that bioactivates polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as the carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene. The increase of CYP1A1 activity is the reflect of a transcriptional gene activation. To date, the main factors involved in this induction are the basic helix-loop-helix/Per-Arnt-Sim class of transcription factors: the AhR and the Arnt. Other factors modulate this gene induction. The knowledge of the mechanisms involved in CYP1A1 induction have relevance in public health with carcinogenesis, epidemiology and cancer prevention.
