ABSTRACT

Fluoroindate glasses are examples of non-oxide glasses which are the subject of intense research. Because their characteristic phonon energies are small and due to their large resistance to atmospheric moisture, the fluoroindate glasses are emerging as a promising group of halide glasses for photonic applications.

In this paper we discuss the glass formation and some optical phenomena including energy transfer and frequency upconversion processes in rare-earth doped fluoroindate glasses. The results for glasses doped with Pr3+, Er3+ and Nd3+ are reported. The possible mechanisms of energy transfer are discussed and their relative importance in the rare-earth concentration range of our studies is discussed.
