ABSTRACT Aromatase is an enzyme naturally occurring in the human female’s placental tissue. Aromatase is useful in that it converts androgens to estrogens during the biosynthesis of estrogen hormones. The inhibition of aromatase is a specific route to control estrogen dependent diseases, especially breast cancer. Research has shown that steroidal substrate analogues are effective in aromatase inhibition. The discovery is quite intriguing since many estrogen regulating medications are found to have unpleasant side effects. Since estrogen is responsible for approximately 40 percent of breast cancers, this makes aromatase inhibition helpful in the fight against breast cancer and other estrogen- dependent diseases. Our recent research methods included the preparation of new inhibitors which were found to inhibit aromatase.
