ABSTRACT Seeds undergo many cellular and metabolic changes during germination. At the early stage of cereal seed germination, α -amylases play a major role for starch degradation. Rice α -amylases belong to multigene family, and their tissue specific expressions are regulated by phytohormones, metabolic sugars and calcium ion. In this paper, we have reviewed the molecular regulatory mechanism of different expression pathways of α -amylase isoforms with attention to intra-pathways interaction in germinating rice cells.
