ABSTRACT

Aryl migration to the vicinal position is quite common in many carbocation reactions. Electrocyclic ring opening (ERO) also occurs in certain systems. Long range aryl migration (LRAM) is rare, coupled with electrocyclic ring opening LRAMERO is restricted to a few systems due to its rigid geometric requirements. This process has been observed largely in 3,3-Di or mono aryl substituted tricyclo [3.2.1.O2,4] octyl systems. The mechanistic pathways (Ar1-5, Ar2-6), the geometric requirements, the possibilities of whether ERO and LRAM are concerted or ERO is subsequent to aryl participation and a recent report of radical initiated LRAMERO are discussed.
