ABSTRACT Chemical modification reactions of bacterial polyesters have been rewieved. Short chain length poly(3-hydroxy alkanoate)s, (sPHA)s and medium chain length poly(3- hydroxy alkanoate)s, (mPHA)s were obtained from carbon sources by using microorganisms such as Alcaligenes eutrophus and Pseudomonas oleovorans respectively. Peroxide curing, hydrolysis, transesterification, grafting with other polymer and irradiation reactions on the PHAs were carried out to improve their mechanical, physical and thermal properties. Thermoplastic elastomers, amphiphylic copolymers and functionalized polymers based on bacterial polyestyers were obtained by the chemical modification reactions.
